Congestion is a common complaint. Sometimes it is constant or fixed and it also may alternate from side-to-side.
Problems such as allergies, sinusitis, non-allergic or vasomotor rhinitis are frequent causes.
Fixed blockage is often due to a deviated septum and external deformities from fracture.
After an exam and possibly nasal rhinoscopy and CT scan, a plan is outlined. Medication may help but if symptoms persist or worsen, surgery may be indicated.
Septoplasty, turbinate reduction and sinus-FESS are then prescribed.
Coblation is one way to reduce the turbinate swelling. We do this in the office, but since insurance does not cover the apparatus, we must charge $500 for the first time and $200 for 2nd treatment. Most of the time one visit helps in 75% of patients.
