Parathyroid glands are located in the lower neck, near the thyroid, although they are not related, except embryonic.

These glands secrete parathormone (PTH) and regulate calcium in the blood via diet, kidneys and the bones.

Lab tests help figure out the causes of elevated levels.

Nuclear imaging (Sestimibi scan) allows likely site of enlarged gland and thus surgical exploration and removal of the adenoma/hyperplasia may be necessary.
