Location in
the head and neck:
Upper Neck / Cheek
These masses begin in salivary
tissue. Some relate to the parotid or 'mumps' gland and are usually benign, such as a
benign mixed tumor. Others occur in the submandibular gland and are more often malignant.
Midline
Usually associated with the thyroid, the
thyroglossal duct cyst represents
a tract of tissue descendant from the tongue. They need to be removed.
Lateral
Lateral
masses are likely to be congenital such as
a branchial cyst, but may possibly be a lymph node. Both require
removal.
Posterior
Usually a lymph node,
these may originate from areas in the neck, arm, or below the clavicle. Chest and abdomen
are usual sources. X-rays or CT's of the chest may help. Biopsy of the
mass is recommended.
