Nodes occur throughout the body. The head and neck is no
exception. Usually they reside laterally underneath the large sterno-mastoid muscles.
Tenderness occurs from inflammation and infection.
Non-tender nodes imply a longer term and probably more serious illness.
Nodes can be biopsied with fine needles (FNA)
or totally removed where the sample can be examined in
it's entirety and sent to the lab for cell markers and very fine genetic studies.
