Prolonged nasal infection with viral infections such as URI or Flu, may lead to chronic rhino- sinusitis. This is defined a lasting over 8 weeks.
Prior to that time, acute or sub-acute infections may be treated with antibiotics, decongestants, and steroid pills or sprays.
History and exam are necessary, and then we often require a culture and x-rays such as CT's of the sinus.
If these studies reveal chronic disease, you may still do better with long term steroid sprays such as Rhinocort or Flonase.
Symptoms of increasing frequency of infections, escalation of illness, lack of response to medications all mean that surgical drainage is necessary.
FESS or endoscopic surgery allows drainage of the sinus in a functional manner. Use of the InstaTrak may by necessary, especially with repeat surgery or frontal disease.
