We look at the nose and
sinus together in order to diagnose and treat rhino-sinusitis correctly.
History, exam, x-rays and response to treatment helps us decide how your disease
should be treated for the long term.
Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)
FESS is "state of art" sinus surgery which aims to drain the obstructed sinus without external or intra-oral incisions. This is best
accomplished by conservative means if possible. FESS is done via the nostril using
endoscopes similar to those use in knee joint arthroscopy,. similar to those use in knee joint arthroscopy.
Traditional Sinus Surgery
Caldwell-Luc-an oral incision
to gain access into the maxillary antrum, usually when the FESS approach fails.
External Fronto-Ethmoidectomy-an
external incision in order to enter the frontal and ethmoid sinus, used
when necessary.
Frontal sinus obliteration-occasionally
needed when these conservative technique fail to stop the progress of the
infection. Obliteration of the sinus space, via a coronal (in the hair) incision may be
necessary. The sinus disease is removed and the sinus "separated"
from the nose using abdominal fat.
