Thyroid masses are either
solid nodules or fluid filled cysts. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) can help decide if solid
or cystic.
Depending on the pathology report and
history, suppression with thyroid hormone may help. If the mass is suspicious, you may
require thyroidectomy to remove the mass and determine the staging of the lesion.
Thyroid surgery means at
least removing one lobe and isthmus of the gland. If necessitated by the
pathology, we may need to remove the whole gland.
In either case, you may
need to be on thyroid replacement therapy (Synthroid) for life.
